Summary:
So Sir has been sick for a couple days and everyone especially Patsy is hoping that he pulls threw. Sunday September 17,1865 Sir had never pulled threw and ended up dying. Nancy had came back and Ma'am and Nancy were having a hard time dealing with the whole situation. They didn't want him to be left still in the bed, but the whole of them didn't really know what to do so they had no choice. As a way to show respect all the people in the neighborhood had signed a white piece of paper, if they had worked with him they put a big X and some of them being illterate too didn't know how to write their names or spell letters. 2 days later he was then buried and the whole neighborhood attended. He was buried in what was to be the family cemetry.
Quote:
"There ain't one of us here know more about reading and writing than you. So you is the teacher"
- This quote reflects that they didn't have much confidence in themselves to being smart. Patsy had alot of reading and writing skills, but i guess because she was a former slave she is still stuck in the same old habits of hiding it. Also they finally got a school and new teacher to establish their new education.
Reaction:
My reaction towards this is that it's sad that Sir had to die, but at the same time he didn't really know how to treat Patsy and he was constantly arguing with his wife Ma'am. I see it as everyone has their time and deserves to die and move on sometime, maybe it was his time in that day in age. Also I loved how the quotes were expressed in this section of the reading it was more encouraging, as if someone was giving me the advice.

Summary:
This section of the book that I`ve read was about Patsy and her friend Ruth. They had wanted to go to school. Some person who called himself Reverend McNeal was guiding them and the other free slaves through the process of trying to get a school. He constantly reminded them that just because he had talked with more education didn`t mean that he hadn't gone threw the same things they had went through. The Sir of the land was very mad about the freed slaves being able to get schooled so he protested that the reverend was to be gone, and that he was to never come back on his land again. The reverend didn't listen, but Patsy and her friend Ruth went into this old barn like and cleared it out, cleaned it and everything just so that it can look nice and presentable for their new woman teacher. They was all hoping that she wouldn't be mean and would like teaching slaves at the most free slaves. Previously before how Nancy's mom had tooken her away Patsy was just sitting in her room and wondering if one day she would ever come back again.
Quote:
"We have our wings on now, Mister Joe. We can fly whenever was want to" [ Hansen 96 ]
- This quote really reflects how Patsy being a slave and all, she still had hope even after Charles and Annie left and made her world change even more. She feels like she had enough hope and it got her free so now she wants to use the same hope to make her get her education.
Reaction:
My reaction towards this situation in the book is that I believe Patsy has some type of hope and potential. She desperately wants an education so I believe that if she works as hard as she is working she will get the education she wants and needs, and hopefully she will get the perfect teacher that is willing to help her.

Summary:
The next couple of stories in Patsy's diary was saying that Nancy's mother had ran away. Ruth (Nancy's moms) came back and acted like she planned on staying with the family again. She stayed for a few days and then in the middle of the night she kidnapped her daughter and ran away into the night. They never heard from the poor child and the mother again. Later after that Patsy and her new friend Phillip were attending school, but hiding the fact.
Quote:
" All you need is the will and the determination " ( Hansen 74)
- This quote happens to have alot of meaning because thats what Phillip said to Patsy to make her feel more encouraged and look forward to starting school.
Reaction:
My reaction on the book this week wouldn't be to explanable because I don't think my understanding of the books content was good this week. It was more so to just read the book and make the post, as opposed to getting the full understanding and content of the book.

Summary
Throughout the book Patsy has been using the book like Annie and Charles had told her too. She has been writing down all her thoughts from day one. One of the little girls Nancy was being taken away from Ma'am. Turns out that it was Nancy's real mother who had came to get her, but Ma'am refused because she had raised her since she was a little girl giving her a good home and food to eat at night. You know trying to fight to get your child back she said hurtful words to Ma'am that she had raised her into slavery and that the slavery was done so that she needed to give her back her daughter. Nancy's screaming at the top of her lungs " I DON`T KNOW YOU ". They got into that whole technical and legal business, but then came to the conclusion that they would let Nancy's mother sleep in the house till further notice and things was straightened out.
Quote;
" I'll starve to death if i go with her. I'll have no more clean white, starched aprons". ( Hansen 44 )
Reaction;
My reaction towards this section of the book is that it is really sad and I wish sometimes things didn't have to happen the way it does. I'm actually glad i started reading this book. It's changing my perspective on life and how I used to understand slavery.

Roar book ; Term 1
Summary
The book that I am reading is called " The Diary of Patsy a Freed Girl ". I've only read the first forty pages and so far I must say the book is AWESOME!! There is this little slave girl by the name of Patsy, she plays in the house with Mistress Davis's children Annie and Charles. Back in that time it was not okay for black people to be able to read, but somehow Annie and Charles managed to do that. They would play school with Patsy who was about the same age as them. According to them Patsy played as the dunce student and Charles was the pupil. Secretly though they was teaching her how to read and write. When Patsy had some free time she would go to the river and take a stick carving words in the dirt to practice her writing. She never got caught, but Mistress told them to stop playing that game because if anyone was to randomly stop by the scene wouldn't look to appropiate. The war had just finished so Annie and Charles got a chance to leave the area. They couldn't carry everything with them so they left Patsy a little notebook and a pen. They told her to write her beautiful thoughts in there and put a date at the top. Patsy liked to act like she didnt understand when she was around them so she could hear the rude things they were saying. They ended up leaving and that was the new beginning of her diary.
Quote
"That's not a proper game. Suppose one of our visitors sees you and misunderstands. It's illegal to teach slaves how to read and write. It spoils them."
Reaction
My reaction on the book was a little bit surprised. I didnt think that it would have been in that kind of setting or manner just by reading the title. I thought things would be a little bit different. The books still good though and I'm looking forward to reading more of it during the weekend.
